Herring Gulls Nesting in Artificial Goose-nesting Structures
نویسنده
چکیده
Herring gull (Larus argentatus) nesting in artificial goose-nesting structures was documented at the Winous Point Shooting Club, Port Clinton, Ohio, 1974—78. Gulls and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) nested in 14—28% and 12—23% of the structures, respectively. Gulls nesting in the structures did not influence goose nesting. Clutch sizes and egg-laying dates were synchronous with other local populations of herring gulls and Canada geese. Aggressive interactions between geese and gulls resulted in geese dominating the structures. OHIO J. SCI. 83 (1): 34-37, 1983

Predator protection or similar habitat selection in red-breasted goose nesting associations: extremes along a continuum
We tested the predator protection and similar habitat hypotheses in relation to red-breasted goose, Branta ruficollis, nesting associations. Geese began laying 1–3 weeks after all associated species. In almost all cases they nested on the mainland only if raptors were also present and always followed raptors when they changed eyries between years. They selected peregrines, Falco peregrinus, and...
متن کاملEffects of nest density and gender on prevalence of antibiotic resistant Gram- negative bacteria in the GI tract of Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus)
Over the past few decades, antibiotic resistant bacteria have become increasingly common in clinical settings and are now a major global public health concern. Wildlife may aid in the dissemination of antibiotic resistant (AR) bacteria and AR genes. Herring Gulls may be particularly important reservoirs of AR bacteria because they forage and roost at humanmodified settings where they may obtain...
متن کاملDNA strand length and EROD activity in relation to two screening measures of genotoxic exposure in Great Lakes herring gulls.
We collected tissues from herring gulls (Larus argentatus) nesting within and outside of the Great Lakes basin. Genotoxin exposure was assessed as fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) in bile and SOS Chromotest-inducing activity in muscle extracts. We determined whether these exposures were associated with decreased erythrocyte DNA strand length and/or induction of hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-de...
متن کاملNegative Interspecies Interactions in a Glaucous-winged Gull Colony on Protection Island, Washington
Protection Island, Washington, is one of the most important nesting sites for Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) in the Puget Sound area. Changes in the numbers and distribution of nests in a Glaucous-winged Gull colony on Violet Point, Protection Island, were tracked from 1980 to 2010. The colony grew steadily until the early 1990s, then declined to about half its former level. The main...
متن کاملCLIFF-NESTING ADAPTATIONS OF THE GALiPAGOS SWALLOW-TAILED GULL1
E CULLEN (1957) showed that the cliff-nesting Black-legged Kittiwake (Larus (Rissa) tridactylus) differs from “typical” (i.e., ground-nesting)‘ gulls in many respects. The species’ unique morphological and behavioral characters, Cullen cogently argued, have resulted from adaptation (either directly or indirectly) to cliff-breeding. Epistemologically, the correlation between cliff-nesting and un...
